New art installation at VFN
As a memento of the tragic bombing of the center of Prague on February 14, 1945, artistic sculptures made of authentic charred beams were installed at the VFN.
The author of the three separate artifacts is academic sculptor Vojtěch Adamec. The material for the installation was discovered during the reconstruction of the roof of one of the historic hospital buildings and experts preserved it as a unique testimony of the war tragedy. The public can find individual installations in places directly connected to the history of the air raid. One is located on the ground floor of the building of the III. Internal Clinic of the General Hospital on Charles Square. The beam is suspended on steel cables as a reminder of the moment that changed the lives of hundreds of people. Another is located in the entrance hall of the Faust House and in the tower of the New Town Hall you can find a suspended installation of a total of five beams. The exhibition is part of the project The Story of Prague 2 – The Disappeared Faces of a NeighborhoodIt commemorates the events of the so-called Ash Wednesday, when 701 people were killed and hundreds more were injured in an accidental Allied bombing. Many buildings were destroyed, including part of the hospital on Charles Square. The buildings and installations are open to the public.
