New devices for central sterilization at the VFN
Central sterilization ensures decontamination, cleaning, assembly (so-called pre-sterilization preparation) and subsequent sterilization of surgical and other resterilizable instruments and materials from operating rooms and half of the VFN clinics. This year, as part of the modernization of the premises, high-temperature steam sterilizers were replaced with new devices and a plasma sterilizer was added. Construction preparations took four weeks.
Steam or plasma
The advantage of steam sterilizers is the absence of chemicals as sterilization media and a high-volume chamber for the charge. Most instruments intended for sterilization are placed in steam sterilizers. This means all metal surgical instruments, drapes, porous cellulose squares and some electronic medical devices.
The plasma sterilizer is a modern device used for low-temperature sterilization (for thermolabile medical devices). Hydrogen peroxide acts as a sterilization medium, which adheres to the surface of the instruments and sterilizes them. An important advantage of this system is that it perfectly decomposes hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. This eliminates the risk of medium residues sticking to the instruments, the risk of contamination of the premises, and also increases work safety for personnel.
