Premature rupture of amniotic fluid before the threshold of fetal viability: a chance for life thanks to top-notch care from the VFN team
Until recently, the diagnosis of premature rupture of amniotic fluid before the 22nd week of pregnancy was considered hopeless. Currently, 88% of children born after rupture of amniotic fluid before the 22nd week of pregnancy survive, 62% of whom are without serious complications, and 85% of them have normal neurological development at two years of life – these are the results from the Department of Gynecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology of the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and the General Hospital (hereinafter KGPN), making it one of the best in the world! Thanks to the close cooperation of obstetricians and neonatologists, who offer a unique multidisciplinary approach, the situation is changing fundamentally. Specialized care for pregnant women, intensive neonatal care and subsequent support for at-risk newborns today give real hope where there was none a few years ago.
