Unique heart surgery at the VFN!

Doctors from the VFN were the first in the Czech Republic to replace a patient's dysfunctional tricuspid heart valve with an artificial catheter-based valve.

A unique operation, the replacement of a dysfunctional tricuspid valve with an artificial bioprosthesis, was performed by cardiologists from the 2nd Internal Department of Cardiology and Angiology of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and the General Hospital. The patient's severe insufficiency of the tricuspid valve between the right ventricle and the atrium was revealed by swelling of the legs, shortness of breath, but also repeated hospitalizations. The new approach offers a more gentle solution and improved quality of life in high-risk patients with heart failure.

A team of cardiologists from the General University Hospital in Prague and the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, performed a unique procedure in which a patient with a serious heart condition replaced a non-functional tricuspid valve with an artificial one made of animal tissue. The 69-year-old man suffered from leg swelling, shortness of breath and repeated hospitalizations. These symptoms alerted him to a serious disorder of the tricuspid valve between the right ventricle and the atrium. Thanks to the gentle catheterization procedure, the patient now has a chance for a quality and full life, even though conventional medical procedures were no longer possible for him.
