VFN has already released 8 times more snake antisera than last year

In 2021, our toxicological information center issued only 1 package of snakebite antiserum between 1/1 and 8/23. Viper antidote was indicated for developing symptoms in two people (a 6-year-old boy and a 32-year-old man). During the same period this year, doctors have already issued 8 packs. Antiserum has been indicated for 4 children so far, all of them recovered after its administration.

"After a viper bite, it is necessary to ensure physical rest, disinfect the wound and immobilize the affected limb with a splint. Cold compresses can be applied to the swelling. In no case is it recommended to use a tourniquet, vacuum the wound, cut it open or carry out other interventions that would worsen the tissue damage," advises MUDr. Kateřina Kotíková, head of TIS VFN. But prevention is of course the best: wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and long pants in nature, avoid sunny clearings where snakes like to bask, definitely don't try to catch a viper, tease it or look at it too closely.
