Polka Dot Day will support patients with psoriasis
In the Czech Republic, almost 260 thousand people live with a diagnosis of psoriasis! The disease can manifest itself at any age, most often it appears between the ages of 15 and 35. The cause is an immune disorder, which is accompanied by inflammation and joint disease - psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis cannot be completely cured, but the condition can be significantly improved with various treatments. "In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of patients receiving specialized care. The main reasons are the expanding availability of modern drugs and the growing awareness that the disease can be successfully treated," says MUDr. Martina Kojanová, Ph.D., from the Department of Dermatovenerology, 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and General Hospital in Prague. Modern treatment brings a fundamental improvement in the quality of life of patients. The symptoms of psoriasis often disappear completely or are reduced to a minimum. "The success rate of the treatment is very high, it is usually well tolerated and causes minimal discomfort to the patient. It is most often administered in the form of subcutaneous injections at intervals of several weeks to months or in the form of tablets. Thanks to this, patients can return to their normal lives,” says the dermatologist. The goal is to initiate effective treatment in a timely manner, also considering that psoriasis is not just a skin disease, but is associated with a number of associated diseases, especially joint, metabolic and cardiovascular. The awareness-raising event called Polka Dot Day is organized by the non-profit organization Revenium, zs, which has long focused on helping people with chronic diseases and disabilities. People who join the challenge will choose an outfit with polka dots on October 29, take a photo of themselves and share the picture on social networks with the hashtag #PuntikovyDen2025.
