VFN has been saving babies thanks to ECMO for 15 years!

Saving newborns by connecting them to extracorporeal circulation? Previously science fiction, now reality at the VFN!

The ECMO team of the General University Hospital in Prague has treated 124 children since 2010, 83 of whom were newborns. Doctors resort to the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in newborns and infants when other life-saving options have failed. The survival rate of newborns after the intervention of the ECMO team is 81 percent in the Czech Republic and 64 percent worldwide. Early initiation of ECMO therapy is key. The rapid transport of the team to the patients and their transport in a special incubator to the General Hospital is enabled by close cooperation with the Emergency Services and the Czech Army, which has been transporting the General Hospital ECMO team by air for the past 9 years.
