Specific treatment of covid patients at KARIM

During the pandemic, almost one hundred critically ill patients were transferred to the Department of Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (KARIM) of the General Hospital and the First Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague from other hospitals throughout the Czech Republic. In total, over two thousand of them ended up on the devices at VFN. Covid patients are treated here by doctors on the basis of a viral load in the body, due to the transmission of dangerous bacteria they no longer use protective overalls and try to minimize the length of connection of patients to artificial lung ventilation. Every day, patients lose even 5 percent of their muscle mass.

"At the clinic, patients with the most severe form of covid-19 have been concentrated since the beginning of the pandemic. In total, more than two thousand patients underwent intensive care. Since 2020, we have registered almost 300 severe SARS-CoV-2 ARDS, so-called acute respiratory distress syndromes, of which we had to connect 115 people to ECMO. For 85 critically ill patients, we had to go urgently to other hospitals in the Czech Republic and Moravia, " stated by the head of KARIM doc. MUDr. Jan Bláha, Ph.D., MHA, noting that VFN doctors have already made significant progress in patient care during the pandemic. They have diametrically changed a number of measures and treatment procedures, without which they were initially unable to imagine working at a clinic in a swamp environment. With its innovative treatment, specific procedures, and above all experience, KARIM VFN is also a counseling center for a number of other hospitals.
