Urology at the VFN celebrates 50 years

More than 2,300 specialized urological procedures per year and a total of over 450 urological robotic surgeries – these are the capabilities of the Urology Clinic of the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and the General Hospital. The important urological department provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care to adult and pediatric patients in the entire range of urology, with the exception of kidney transplantation. JAs the only urological clinic in the Czech Republic, it has repeatedly defended the prestigious European accreditations EBU and EBPU, guaranteeing care according to the strictest international standards. It is also the largest Czech teaching urological center.

The clinic's experienced team performs over 2,300 specialized urological procedures annually. Their broad spectrum includes extensive reconstructive surgeries, endourological procedures, and uro-oncological surgery. The urological clinic is also part of the Comprehensive Oncology Center and provides diagnostics and surgical treatment of malignant tumors of the prostate, kidneys, bladder, ureter, penis, and testicles. In recent years, the clinic has expanded the spectrum of minimally invasive procedures thanks to a new robotic center equipped with the da Vinci system. The first robotic surgery took place here on December 4, 2023. It was a radical prostatectomy and was performed by the surgical team led by the head of the clinic, MUDr. Michal Pešl, FEBU. The robotic system is also used by other clinics of the VFN, currently the Clinic of Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Neonatology and the 1st Surgical Clinic - Abdominal, Thoracic, and Trauma Surgery.

Experts from the Institute of Nuclear Medicine of the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and the General Hospital of Prague provided the first patient with prostate cancer with so-called radioligand therapy in November 2025. The innovative treatment targets the tumor itself and hardly affects the surrounding healthy tissues. The General University Hospital in Prague is one of the few institutions in the Czech Republic that currently provides this advanced therapy.
