The 1st Department of Surgery is a joint workplace of the General University Hospital in Prague and the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague and provides the highest medical, professional care. Our clinic is one of the most modern Czech surgical workplaces with the largest number of procedures and the largest number of outpatient treatments. The scope of surgical care is significant. The clinic provides continuous medical care in the field of general surgery and traumatology. 80,000 - 90,000 patients are treated annually, and around 10,000 surgical procedures are performed, both outpatient and inpatient or in a consulting room. The number of hospitalizations is around 6,000-7,000/year. The clinic has 128 beds and 18 intensive care beds. There are 10 operating rooms available in the clinical and outpatient sections.

The 1st Surgical Clinic performs classical (open), laparoscopic, and robotic abdominal surgeries on two robotic systems. The main treatment areas of general surgical care are thyroid surgery, thoracic surgery, breast surgery including plastic surgery, complete abdominal surgery, and retroperitoneal surgery with a main focus on surgery of the esophagus and stomach, liver, pancreas, intestines, and rectum. In cooperation with the Orthopedic Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and the Bulovka Hospital and the Oncology Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and the General Hospital, the workplace is a comprehensive center for the treatment of sarcomas and other rare tumors of all localizations. Other areas implemented by the 1st Surgical Clinic are bariatric and metabolic surgery, adrenal surgery, plastic surgery, and melanoma surgery. The clinic is home to the Center for Oncovascular Surgery focused on the treatment of advanced tumors of most localizations, in cooperation with the 2nd Surgical Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and the General Hospital. The 1st Department of Surgery is an important part of the Comprehensive Oncology Center, and has a number of functional multidisciplinary seminars with practically nationwide coverage. The connection to an excellent research and preclinical base is unique within the hospital and the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University.

The 1st Surgical Clinic also includes traumatology, which focuses primarily on the complete spectrum of trauma surgery, knee arthroscopy, and hand surgery.

The 1st Surgical Clinic has super-specialized centers, clinics and outpatient clinics, namely the sarcoma center, oncovascular center, cytoreductive surgery & HIPEC/PIPAC center, bariatric and breast surgery center, hand surgery center, foot surgery center, orthopedic outpatient clinic, endocrine surgery center, wound healing clinic, stoma clinic and nutritional care center, gerontotraumatology clinic, myoskeletal medicine center.

Historically and currently, the clinic has educated and educates the largest number of surgeons in the Czech Republic. It provides certification exams and exams in other specialties. The number and quality of teaching materials, and especially books produced by the clinic, is unique not only in the Czech Republic.

Development cooperation also takes place with the manufacturing sector in the design and preparation of new surgical techniques and technologies.

Foreign contacts are a matter of course, not only within the international Albert collection managed by the institution, but primarily within the scope of therapeutic and preventive activities. The institution has ongoing contacts with a number of leading world institutions, e.g. in the USA, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland and many other countries.

The 1st Surgical Clinic and its outpatient department work in various capacities both at the General Hospital and the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, but also as researchers of scientific and research tasks - a total of 50 doctors (including doctors specializing in internal medicine and doctors of the intensive care unit). 220 employees work in non-medical fields. The 1st Surgical Clinic is a scientific and research workplace, teaching surgical fields and nursing care for master's and bachelor's studies at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Czech and foreign students and doctors.

The management and the entire team of the 1st Surgical Clinic implement and promote modern treatment and nursing procedures and strive to ensure that the staff not only does quality work, but is also friendly to patients. Our common goal is that patients leave the clinic healed and satisfied.
