Influenza and its risks for chronically ill people
At the VFN, we care for children and adults with chronic illnesses in several specialized departments. Therefore, we know from practice that the flu in these patients can have a different and more complicated course.
- Children are more likely to develop complications such as otitis media or sinusitis.
- In people with chronic diseases – such as heart, lung, kidney disease or diabetes – the flu can worsen the course of the underlying disease and significantly prolong the recovery time.
- In more severe cases, antiviral treatment can be used, which is effective against influenza viruses.
- However, antibiotics do not work on the flu, they are only intended to treat bacterial infections.
- Prevention and early protection are therefore key for risk groups.
Protect your health, prevention is key!
