Testing Laboratory for Dental Materials

The VFN Dental Materials Testing Laboratory was established from the original technological laboratory of the Stomatological Research Institute, which was incorporated into the General Teaching Hospital in Prague in September 1999 based on a decision of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic. By organizational measures of the VFN and the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, the institute was renamed as of January 1, 2012 to the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry, which became part of the Institute as of September 1, 2014 through another organizational change. Department of Stomatology, General Teaching Hospital and First Faculty of Medicine.

Approximately two years of targeted preparation of the testing laboratory for accreditation Czech Accreditation Institute, ops was successfully completed in March 2000 by obtaining the first Accreditation Certificate. The necessary powers and responsibilities for compliance with all accreditation criteria have been delegated to its supervisor.

The scope of accredited testing activities is given by the appendix of the current accreditation certificate issued by ČIA based on the fulfillment of accreditation requirements according to the criterion standard ČSN EN ISO / IEC 17025 Conformity assessment - General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. The testing laboratory management guarantees that all laboratory activities comply with the requirements of this standard, the legitimate requirements of customers, regulators and recognition organizations.

The accredited testing laboratory carries out physical-mechanical testing of dental materials, both on the basis of customer orders and as part of interlaboratory comparisons or other research projects. It focuses on testing dental composite materials, glass ionomer cements, crown and bridge resin materials, amalgams, adhesive systems and dental impression materials. The test procedures are mainly based on international ISO standards adopted into the Czech system of technical standards. The testing laboratory tests the depth of cure, water absorption, solubility and flexural strength of reconstructive polymer materials, resin-modified cements, pit and fissure sealing materials and crown and bridge resin materials, as well as the compressive strength of dental cements and amalgams. For dental amalgam, creep, plasticity time and appearance after mixing are also evaluated. The most demanding test in terms of sample preparation is the determination of the bond strength of adhesive systems to dental tissues (enamel or dentin), see Fig. 4B. The properties of dental impression materials are also tested, primarily their ability to reproduce details and the degree of compatibility with plaster.

As part of their work at the Dental Clinic of the General Hospital and the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, the employees of the testing laboratory participate in a number of other activities, such as treatment and preventive care within the framework of providing health services, teaching students of the Department of Dentistry at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, clinical evaluation of medical devices, testing of various dental materials and cosmetic products for oral hygiene using non-accredited procedures, and research activities, the outputs of which are not subject to testing in the testing laboratory.
