Saving a life in 47 minutes!
An Irish marathon runner who has already completed 21 marathons survived a cardiac arrest thanks to the VFN and the Prague Emergency Medical Service! The rapid intervention of medical professionals and the perfectly coordinated cooperation of the Prague Emergency Medical Service and the team of specialists from the 2nd Internal Clinic of Cardiology and Angiology of the VFN and the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University contributed to saving the life of a 55-year-old Irish runner who collapsed during the 30th Volkswagen Marathon Prague 2025.
The extraordinary intervention shows how a well-established system of pre-hospital and hospital care can save lives even in critical cases by timely deployment of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
