Institute of Clinical and Forensic Toxicology

Workplace characteristics

The Institute of Clinical and Forensic Toxicology (ÚKST) was established on January 1, 2026, by dividing the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.

It provides comprehensive, highly specialized laboratory diagnostics for clinical and forensic purposes. It performs systematic toxicological analyses of a wide range of biological and other materials and focuses primarily on the detection of previously unknown toxicologically significant substances and their metabolites and monitoring patient compliance. It also offers examinations of alternative samples, such as hair or mesentery of newborns, and provides control tests used to monitor the effectiveness of therapy or abstinence from addictive substances. The institute's activities include forensic toxicology for state administration, police, courts and private individuals. The department has a 24-hour emergency service enabling urgent toxicological examinations in severe acute intoxications. Services are provided not only to the General Hospital, but also to other healthcare facilities in Prague, the Central Bohemian Region and, as needed, throughout the Czech Republic.

The Institute also provides consulting services in the field of clinical and forensic toxicology and participates in teaching and scientific research activities of the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and the General Hospital. The laboratories are accredited according to the ČSN EN ISO 15189 standard and regularly participate in external quality controls.
