Open House Festival again at VFN!

The next year of the Open House Prague festival opens the city to everyone for free and will take place as an accompanying program from May 18 to 24. There will be guided walks, exhibitions, lectures and debates. The celebration of architecture will culminate on the weekend of May 23 and 24, when more than 100 buildings and spaces throughout the capital will be open to visitors for free. The General University Hospital will once again make several architectural works accessible - the interesting technical structure of the central boiler room, the Jan Kotěra Ceramic Salon, the premises of the Urology Clinic, the Faust House and also the premises of the former Provincial Maternity Hospital at Apolinář with the Chapel of the Holy Cross.

What you can look forward to with us:

VFN central boiler room, Wenzigova 2083/1, Prague 2
The boiler house supplying heat to the VFN is a lesser-known technical building by architect Karel Prager. This futuristic pyramid-shaped building with a tall chimney from 1993 is the only completed part of Prager's extensive project for the new university hospital complex. Entry to this building is at your own risk and is not suitable for children, the elderly or people with a fear of heights. No one will be allowed into the premises without sturdy footwear - the floor in the building is made only of slats.

Ceramics Lounge, Department of Occupational Medicine, VFN, Na Bojišti 1771/1, Prague 2
Behind the facade of the Neo-Renaissance corner building of the former VFN sanatorium hides a world-unique ceramic lounge. It was designed by Jan Kotěra in 1914 as part of a luxurious sanatorium for the rest and relaxation of mobile patients. The space, in which plant and geometric art nouveau elements are combined, is decorated with tiles with leaf and floral glazes. There is an ornamental tile on the floor. The dominant feature of the room is the fountain with the sculpture of the Woman above the Spring by Stanislav and Vojtěch Suchard.

Urology Clinic, Ke Karlovu 6, Prague 2
In the early 1970s, a heritage reserve was declared, which also included the New Town, and the architects had the task of creating a building that, with its dimensions and materials, would appropriately connect with the surrounding historic buildings. The result is a brutalist building in the form of a fragmented block, on the facade of which bands of windows alternate with bands of exposed concrete and ceramic tiles. Prominent artists participated in the decoration of the clinic, such as Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, whose sculpture with a family motif still decorates the entrance hall.

Chapel of the Holy Cross at the Department of Gynecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology, Apolinářská 18, Prague 2
It is part of one of the oldest maternity hospitals in the world, which has already celebrated 150 years since its foundation. It is one of the most architecturally interesting parts of the building designed by architect Josef Hlávka. The ceiling is formed by a star-shaped vault, which is led to the central column, and there is also a marble baptismal font, a marble altar, a neo-Gothic oak confessional and a choir with an organ. The painted decoration was designed by the Czech painter Adolf Liebscher together with Adolf Körber in 1902.

Faust's House, Karlovo náměstí 40, Prague 2
In the 16th century, this house was owned by the infamous court alchemist of Rudolf II. Edward Kelley and another owner also conducted chemical experiments here, so all of Prague talked about the devil's rampage in this building. This gave rise to the legend of Dr. Faust, although the historical Dr. Faust never lived here. Adding to the mystery was a hole in the ceiling that could not be walled up for a long time. Visit the house, steeped in legends, which Alois Jirásek writes about in Old Bohemian Tales, and walk through the rooms known from the film Where the Devil Goes.

There is no need to register in advance for weekend entrances to the buildings. Most buildings are open from 10 am to 6 pm. It is better to check the times for individual buildings on the official event website.
