Workplace characteristics

The Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics of the General Hospital and the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, performs clinical-biochemical, cytogenetic, immunological and allergological, microbiological, molecular biological, hematological and serological examinations for the departments of the General Hospital and the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. The Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics also provides consultation and advisory services in the field of clinical biochemistry, immunology and allergology (laboratory issues), medical genetics, cytogenomics, molecular oncology, hematology and medical microbiology (including consultation of therapy and approval of prescribed antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral drugs). The Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics outpatient clinic focuses on parenteral and enteral nutrition, clinical biochemistry. The Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics also provides requested laboratory services to other healthcare facilities. The Thrombosis Center performs diagnostics, dispensary and treatment of patients with hemostasis disorders, monitoring of patients with thrombophilic conditions for the catchment area of Prague and the Central Bohemian Region.

The Institute holds an accreditation certificate for selected workplaces according to the standards ČSN EN ISO 15189 ed. 3:2023 and ČSN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. A flexible scope of accreditation has been introduced in the laboratories of the Institute of Laboratory Medicine, which allows other activities to be included in the scope of accreditation without prior assessment by the accreditation body.

Within the framework of undergraduate education at the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, the Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Biochemistry is the guarantor of the subject of medical chemistry and biochemistry, pathobiochemistry, clinical biochemistry and participates in the teaching of other subjects of doctoral, master's and bachelor's programs. We also provide integrated teaching of biomedical engineering with the University of Chemical Technology. In cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine, Czech Technical University, we provide teaching of the subjects of Good Laboratory Practice, Basics of Hygiene and Epidemiology and Clinical Microbiology and Immunology in the 2nd year of the bachelor's degree in Laboratory Methods in Healthcare. The Institute of Medical Biochemistry is part of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry of the Institute of Medical Biochemistry and participates in all forms of postgraduate education in the field. Together with the Faculty of Science, Charles University, it provides an accredited qualification course in Professional Medical Laboratory Methods.
