Radiodiagnostic Clinic
Angiographic Department
Head of the Angiography Department: Jan Kaván, MD, Ph.D.
The Angiography Department of the Radiodiagnostic Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and the General Hospital of Prague is part of the Comprehensive Cardiovascular Center and the Center for Vascular Access of the General University Hospital in Prague. The department has accreditation for the fields Interventional radiology and Vascular interventional radiologyThe catheterization room is equipped with a modern Toshiba Infinix angiography line and a Toshiba Viamo SSA-640A/E1 sonography device, which enable a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to be performed.
We perform vascular diagnostic and minimally invasive treatment procedures on the arteries and veins of the upper and lower extremities, in the abdomen and retroperitoneum.
The spectrum of services includes:
- diagnostic imaging of the blood vessels of the whole body,
- diagnostic sampling of blood samples from adrenal veins and petroleum rafts,
- balloon angioplasty of peripheral vessels (dilation of a narrowed vessel using a balloon catheter),
- introducing stents and stentgrafts into peripheral blood vessels
- insertion of caval filters (filters into the inferior vena cava to prevent pulmonary embolism),
- embolization of benign tumors (closure of vessels feeding the tumor, for example in the treatment of uterine fibroids),
- embolization of malignant tumors, including chemoembolization (a combination of targeted chemotherapy and occlusion of the vessels feeding the tumor),
- articular artery embolization in the treatment of osteoarthritis (GAE),
- Prostate embolization for benign prostatic hyperplasia,
- bariatric gastric embolization as an alternative minimally invasive treatment for obesity,
- introduction of arterial ports for administering chemotherapy directly into the artery supplying the tumor,
- insertion of central venous catheters in complicated patients and solving their specific complications in cooperation with the Center for Vascular Access and the Nephrology Clinic,
- endovascular dialysis shunt placement (endoAVF).
Our department has long specialized primarily in the care of vascular access for hemodialysis and oncological interventional procedures.
In addition to standard angiographic examinations using iodine contrast agent, we also perform angiography using carbon dioxide (CO₂). We are also able to perform dialysis shunt treatment under ultrasound control without the need for contrast agent.
In addition to planned procedures, we provide 24/7 care for patients with acute vascular conditions. The most common include acute limb ischemia or life-threatening bleeding, which require rapid and highly specialized interventional solutions.
Every year, we examine and treat approximately 1,000 patients in our angiography department.
