The Karlov Day Care Center provides adult patients with psychiatric illnesses with a safe space and support for understanding, stabilizing, and treating their mental health problems. Clients attend the therapeutic program from home, remaining in their own home and not burdened by stigma and hospitalization.
We emphasize psychotherapeutic support and an individual approach based on the needs of each client. Pharmacotherapy is led by an outpatient psychiatrist; however, if necessary, we are available to consult and adjust medication according to the current condition.
Who is the program for?
The program is open to patients aged 18 to 65 with anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders and psychosomatic problems, as well as those with mental deterioration caused by long-term stress or acute stress reaction. We also help with the rehabilitation and return to normal life of patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenic disorders, such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, acute and transient psychotic disorder or delusional disorder, if their condition allows for outpatient care.
Program organization
The program runs on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., on Fridays until 1:00 p.m. with the option of ordering lunch.
The attendance is usually planned for two to three months according to the agreement with the client and according to the therapeutic goals (the period can be shortened or extended by agreement). Absence from the program due to, for example, doctor's visits is possible, it is advisable to inform them in advance.
The care is covered by health insurance.
Therapeutic program
The program takes place in two parallel psychotherapy groups, each led by two experienced therapists; each group is attended by approximately ten clients. Within the framework of group work, we focus on formulating difficulties and therapeutic assignments, improving the ability to be aware of one's own experiences and manage emotions, naming problems and working with their causes. However, together we mainly look for solutions to difficulties and try to describe realistic goals leading to a more satisfied and stable life.
Part of the therapy is to support insight into the disease and develop skills needed to recognize warning signs of the disease early, prevent relapse, and avoid unnecessary hospitalization. We also systematically work on social skills, cognitive and memory functions, stabilize daily routines, and facilitate the transition from hospitalization back to normal life.
Group psychotherapy is supplemented by individual psychotherapy support as needed, psychiatric consultations and possible psychodiagnostics. The program also includes art therapy, music therapy, psychorehabilitation, culinary therapy, cognitive function training, memory training and relaxation techniques.
Team
The team consists of experienced psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, art therapists, music therapists and rehabilitation workers. Close interdisciplinary cooperation allows us to respond flexibly to the needs of clients and adapt the program to their current needs.
Indications for admission and contraindications
The basic condition for admission is a stabilized condition allowing outpatient treatment and regular attendance.
Contraindications include acute decompensation of the disease with suicidal activities, with manifestations of active addiction to alcohol or other psychoactive substances, with gambling addiction, active eating disorders, mental retardation or dementia.
Acceptance into the program
Admission to a stationary facility is preceded by an initial consultation with a doctor, on the basis of which the client is assigned to an appropriate group. A recommendation from an outpatient psychiatrist is ideal (not a necessary condition for admission), or we follow up with care after hospitalization in psychiatric facilities.

The Adolescent Day Care Center of the Center for Adolescent and Developmental Psychiatry is an outpatient therapeutic workplace of the Psychiatric Clinic of the General University Hospital in Prague and the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University, which has been providing care for adolescents with mental disorders since 1999.
The facility has long focused on treating problems related to adolescent disorders – emotional disorders, adjustment disorders, psychosomatic disorders, neurotic disorders, eating disorders, and post-COVID consequences associated with social isolation of adolescents.
The Day Care Center for Adolescents (DSA) provides services to clients aged 14 and over with the aim of fulfilling the values based on Evidence Based approaches for adolescents with mental health problems. The emphasis is on regular attendance at the day care center, adherence to a regular regimen – meal, sleep, leisure. The program also includes preparation for returning to school, for the purpose of continuity in education. The priority is the cooperation of parents in the therapeutic process and their participation in systematic family therapy. The standard length of the DSA program is 8 weeks and depends on the client's health condition.
The multidisciplinary team is composed of doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, psychotherapists, addiction specialists, art therapists, occupational therapists, yoga and Mindfulness instructors, educators and other experts who participate in comprehensive patient care.
Services offered to patients include individual, group/family therapy, psychoeducation, coaching, art therapy, occupational therapy, yoga and exercise or canistherapy. For patients with eating disorders, a specific dietary regimen is set up, combined with meal planning and deepening of other competencies under the guidance of a nutritional therapist and a specialized nurse.
Lesson learned:
- DSA does not provide outpatient psychiatric services.
- Contraindications to admission to DSA are alcohol and substance abuse, refusal of treatment, or a degree of mental illness requiring hospitalization.
- The cooperation of parents with treatment procedures is a necessary requirement for the admission of an adolescent to DSA.
