Department of Pediatrics and Inherited Metabolic Disorders

Information for patients

The Department of Pediatrics and Inherited Metabolic Disorders (KPDPM) is one of the largest children's clinics in Prague due to the number of beds and outpatient activities in all pediatric subspecializations. The clinic provides care at all levels (resuscitation, intensive, standard and rehabilitation) for children of all ages, from immature newborns to adolescents, including efforts for a broader concept of patient care (social pediatrics clinic, clinic for complex youth issues) . Almost half of KPDPM's clients are outside Prague, these patients are mostly sent to the clinic at the request of general practitioners for children and adolescents and are in the care of outpatient specialists or are hospitalized in inpatient wards. The obligatory catchment area of KPDPM is the area of Prague 1, 2 and partly Prague 4.

The clinic also has a day care center where more demanding outpatient procedures are required, requiring a few-hour stay at the clinic (infusion, transfusion, stress tests and some diagnostic instrumental performances).

  • Intensive Care Department (ICU) - Patients who require demanding medical and nursing care are often admitted here, often with the support of basic vital functions. The age range of patients here ranges from immature infants to adolescent patients (up to 19 years of age). The ward has two places available to accompany the children (rooming-in) and possibly two more beds outside the ward, to accommodate one of the parents at the clinic.
  • 1st department deals with a wide range of acute and chronic diseases of children from birth to 2-3 years of age. This department is also the only center in the Czech Republic dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of inherited metabolic disorders in children from birth to 19 years of age. The department has a total of 21 beds for children + 18 beds for accompanying children. Standard rooms are double and there are two above-standard rooms in the department, which are single and are equipped with toilet, shower, TV and refrigerator. The price per night in an superior room is 900 CZK.
  • 2nd department deals with the issue of acute and chronic diseases of children from 2-3 years to 19 years of age. This department specializes in rheumatology, gastroenterology and eating disorders. The department has a total of 22 beds, depending on the occupancy of the department can be accompanied by a child. There are two superior rooms, equipped with TV, refrigerator, shared toilet and shower, whose price is 700 CZK / night and since September 2012 there is a separate superior room with private toilet and shower for 700 CZK / night. Unfortunately, it is not possible to book superior rooms in any of the wards in advance due to capacity reasons, before the start of hospitalization. Payment for an above-standard room is made at the end of the hospitalization - in cash at the ward (preferably the exact amount), by card at the ambulance or, if applicable, by voucher.

There is a possibility in the ICU department and partly in the 1st department WIFI connection free of charge. In the 2nd ward, it is possible for older children to use one computer in the common playroom with internet connection.

Hospitalized patients may have their own cosmetics and clothes, and if a child uses disposable diapers, they must be taken with them. If the patient is taking special medication for a long time, he / she will hand it over to the nurse on admission, will receive it during his / her stay and will get it back on release. In special cases, the attending physician may authorize the child to administer these medicines to the child, but consent must be signed for the child to administer the product and the medicines must be locked in the bedside table throughout the stay.

Medical Visitation it takes place in all departments every day in the morning (between 8:00 to 10:00) and in the afternoon visit according to the operation of the department and the condition of the patients. In the case of patients who are hospitalized for examination and who have an escort at the ward, an afternoon walk is possible after consultation with the doctor.

Visits for family members and other close persons they are in the 1st ward daily from 12:30 to 18:30 and in the 2nd ward daily from 15:00 to 17:00 (outside these hours only by prior arrangement). Visits to the ICU are individual in agreement with the attending physician and are governed primarily by the patient's health and the operation of the department.

The written consent of the child's legal representative is required for the hospitalization of the child. Furthermore, some other informed consents to examinations or therapies are required - all information will be given to patients or their parents (the child's legal representative) upon admission to the outpatient clinic or ward, or for planned admissions during the hospital appointment. All KPDPM departments are part of the faculty workplace, where students of medical faculties and medical schools are taught, which is an integral part of the clinic's program. Therefore, we ask patients and their parents to understand. The patient or his / her legal representative gives written consent to the presence of students.
